Laptop Will Not Turn On All of a Sudden

A laptop will not turn on for a lot of reasons, more than can be listed. But the simplest thing to do, just in case, is:

  1. Unplug the laptop’s power/AC adapter.
  2. Remove the laptop’s battery.
  3. Press the power button repeatedly, to discharge any left over energy.
  4. Replace the laptop’s battery.
  5. Press the power button.

If that doesn’t do it then you may have some more serious issues.

OTHER IDEAS:

  • The laptop charging port, also known as a DC Jack, could be damaged.
  • The charger, also known as an AC Adapter, could be “dead.”
  • The power (on/off) button could be malfunctioning.
  • The motherboard (mainboard, logic board) could be “fried.” This can happen because of:
    • Heat
    • Spills
    • Dust
    • Age
    • Or just a fluke
  • Some, not many, laptops will not turn on if their CMOS, CLOCK, PRAM battery is dead.
  • A bad BIOS flash, but usually the computer will still power on.
  • Unseated or faulty memory, RAM, DDR, DDR2, DDR3, DIMMS, SO-DIMMS, etc have been known to keep a laptop from powering on.
  • And last, there are some laptops that will not power on if the fan(s) cannot spin. (Usually the laptop will power on and say “FAN FAILURE” and then turn itself off if it overheats.)
